Japan’s Producer Inflation Eases to 6.8% in September

Japan’s producer inflation slowed in September, while import costs remained well above year-earlier levels, according to preliminary figures released by the Bank of Japan on 13 October 2026. The figures highlight differences between domestic goods prices and the cost of goods purchased from overseas.

Domestic prices fall as annual growth slows

Producer prices declined 0.3% from August. Their annual increase eased to 6.8% from 7.6% in August. Agriculture, forestry and fishery prices fell 8.8% on the month, and petroleum and coal products dropped 2.2%. Electricity, gas and water prices rose 1.3%, showing that the decline was uneven across sectors.

Import prices fell 0.2% on a yen basis but remained 24.5% above a year earlier. On a contract-currency basis, they rose 1.0% month on month and 17.9% year on year. The figures are preliminary, and the next report is scheduled for 12 November. Source: BOJ September CGPI report.

Understanding the measures

The domestic producer index covers goods produced and traded within Japan’s corporate sector. For imports, the yen measure converts foreign-currency prices using monthly average exchange rates; the contract-currency measure uses prices in the currencies agreed for transactions. This distinction helps separate currency conversion effects from changes in quoted goods prices. Source: BOJ methodology.

Market interpretation

For market readers, softer domestic goods inflation and elevated import costs give a mixed picture for the yen and Japanese equities. The monthly decline offers evidence of some easing in business costs, but it does not establish a sustained trend in consumer inflation. The differing import measures also show why exchange-rate effects matter when assessing inflation pressure. Further consumer-price and wage data will help clarify whether companies continue passing costs through to households.
